This belongs in a motor racing magazine of some kind -- assuming such a thing exists. I think we are all hoping that we will get multi chassis at the end of the month, but that is yet to be seen. The main thing that allowed for crazy innovation at Indy was the USAC sanctioning and the Hullman/George family dislike of CART. Basically if they could show through open competition how much better the racing could be, they could stick it to CART a little for breaking off from USAC.

Can this happen again since the entire series and Indy are under the IRL banner? Likely not. However, it would be amazing if it could return in some way. I think that is part of the view of the ICONIC group, opening up the entire series. I'm guessing the only way this happens at Indy though is if they 'reserve' spots for the IRL regulars.
I'd love to be wrong, but with the current monetary squeeze throughout racing, I don't see it happening for a few years. I'd imagine a few teams would love to run their own chassis and engines again. The league appears to be listening, its just unclear how much they are comfortable doing at this point.
Indy is all about innovation though, and opening up the rules could show fans and teams what the future should be holding... the only problem is getting engine and chassis partners in the series to be comfortable with that type of constant threat. Multi engine choices and multi chassis choices seem to be leading us back down that road, but I think its a long road.

~RyanAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
